AXES AND CONTROL SURFACES OF AN AIRCRAFT IN FLIGHT?

If you ever watched pilots performing acrobatic stunts, you can see that they do amazing and complicated maneuvers. they do with the help of control surfaces.
An aircraft in flight rotates in three perpendicular axes namely(longitudinal, lateral, vertical).

  working of control surfaces:

  • AILERONS:ailerons are located at the trailing edge of wing. The pilot moves them up and down by using yoke. This rotates the aircraft on it’s longitudinal axis, causing it to “roll” left or right. Ailerons accomplish this by changing the amount of lift generated on each wing.
  • WORKING:The ailerons work by changing the effective shape of the airfoil of the outer portion of the wing. Ailerons usually work in opposition that is as the right aileron is deflected upward, the left is deflected downward, and vice versa.suppose if the left aileron is deflected downside, then right is deflected upward.that is on the left wing lift generated is more, and on right wing is less, thus it creates a pressure difference, thus the aircraft is made to roll along longitudinal axis in left direction.if rudder is deflected right ,the aircraft will yaw in opposite direction.

  • RUDDER:rudder are located at vertical stabilizers, this control surface is used for yawing movement that is turning the aircraft nose to left or right direction.suppose if rudder is deflected right ,the aircraft will yaw in opposite direction.
  • NOTE:The rudder is used to control the position of the nose of the aircraft. Interestingly, it is NOT used to turn the aircraft in flight. it can be controlled with the help of aileron, elevator.

    • ELEVATORS:elevators are located at horizontal stabilizers, this control surface is used for pitching moment along lateral/normal axes.at the time of take-off the elevators are made up side such that lift is created more such that moving the nose of an aircraft up.

longitudinal axes:Along this axes rolling moment of an aircraft takes place control with the help of ailerons,

vertical axes:Along this axes yawing moment takes place control with the help of rudder.

lateral axes:Along this axes pitching moment of an aircraft takes place controlled with the help of elevators
NOTE:ALL THE AXES PASSES THROUGH CENTER OF GRAVITY of airplane .
