What is black box?

You might heard of news like (xyz) plane has crash, and the passengers got severe injury,So in this post i will explain you what do the investigators do after the plane crash, first and foremost thing is they will search for black box.so then what is black box? below are the some plane crash.

  • Accidents such as united Arab airline flight 869(1963) crashed off Bombay Airport, killing all 63 on board.
  •  Indian Airlines flight 113 crashed on its final approach to Ahmedabad airport due to pilot error on 19 October 1988. Deaths were 130.
  • AIR FRANCE 447.
were some of the air crashes which were an lighting bolt for the Aviation industry. Investigators were able to find the cause of these accidents because of the data they found within the black boxes. A Black box is a recording device installed on most modern aircraft as well as mandated by authorities worldwide. They are expensive and cost between $10000 to $15000 each. They record several unique performance parameters throughout the flight which is then stored on solid state drives as well as other high capacity memory devices.

     HISTORY:

  • First prototype was produced in 1956 by David warren.
  • First Generation Foil Recorders(1950).
  • Second Generation Tape Recorders(1965).
  • Third Generation Solid State Recorders(1990).

WHAT IS INSIDE THE BLACK BOX?
There are several mini instrument are assembled in black box for various recording of flight.
the two major instruments that are of the highest priority to investigators are:

1. Flight Data Recorder (FDR).

2. Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).

FLIGHT DATA RECORDER:
A Flight Data Recorder is one of the first devices that is searched for and consequently secured after an accident. It records various significant performance parameters such as airspeed, altitude, heading, pitch, etc. A modern FDR records a minimum of 88 parameters which is also the minimum requirement under the  United States Federal Regulations. When data is retrieved from an FDR, the investigators can render the data that reconstructs the flight prior to the crash.  An FDR records up to 25 hours of continuous data and has an impact tolerance off 3400Gs. It can resist up to 1100 Deg Celsius and a water pressure up to 20,000ft.
PARAMETERS RECORDED BY MOST FDR:

  • FUEL FLOW
  • CONTROL WHEEL POSITION .
  • RUDDER-PEDAL POSITION

COCKPIT VOICE RECORDER:

  • It records the audio environment in the flight deck of an aircraft for  the purpose of accidents and incidents.
  • This is typically achieved by recording the signals of the microphone and earphones of the pilots headsets &of an area microphone in the roof of the cockpit.

Now-a-days cars are also equipped with MVEDR(motor vehicle event data recorder)  known as vehicle BLACK BOX.

  • These devices were originally designed to monitor the activation of the airbags, which in turn saves the driver from getting injured.
  • The car black box records the speed, acceleration, breaking and other important actions of driver before collision.
